It's Fantano's stale and reductionist review style that's the problem. Every review by this guy is basically the same: This is a new album by group X from place Y, I liked the drum effects on track A but not the vocal line on track B, eeh, sorta feeling a light 6 on this one. He seems unable or unwilling to engage with albums on a more abstract, conceptual level, for example considering if R Plus Seven's disjointed feel and cheapish instrumentals might be intentional, and what they might indicate about what OPN might be trying to convey with making them that way, or criticizing fucking Kanye for fucking singing out of tune on MBDTF. It seems he values competence over anything else, which should be obvious when he gave rave reviews to Random Access Memory and Darkside's debut, two of the most well played and well produced, but ultimately forgettable and unimaginative albums out this year. He seems to expect that all albums should conform to roughly the same criteria (well played, fully-formed hooky songwriting), and when an album deviates from this zone, he punishes them for it. Stick a fork in him and flip him over, cause this guy is done.
